Large retail group seeks a tax manager - either for a 12 month contract or potentially a permanent role. Day to day this role will involve a mix of corporate tax and inidrect taxes examples include:
General
• Responsibility for compliance matters across all taxes (beginning with UK corporation tax returns) ensuring all submissions are within statutory deadlines
• Identify and implement changes to improve the overall effectiveness of the tax department
• Responsibility for the management and development of the rest of the tax team
Corporation Tax
• To oversee the preparation of, and review the group’s UK corporation tax corporations before presenting to Head of Tax for final review and submission to HMRC
• Responsibility for tax forecasting the group’s quarterly tax payments on account
International Taxes
• Review of the US sales tax returns (prepared & submitted by the Leeds in-house tax department)
• Review of overseas tax returns (e.g. Ireland, Hong Kong, Channel Islands) before submission to HMRC
• Assist the Head of Tax with international tax projects
VAT & Intrastats
• To review the UK, Ireland and Jersey VAT returns
• Oversee the submission of EU VAT and intrastat returns
• Review current group processes to ensure full VAT compliance and work with VAT team to identify opportunities to maximise tax savings
Tax Accounting
• Prepare the monthly and annual tax accounting entries for both the consolidated and subsidiary accounts
• Responsibility for balance sheet integrity of all tax balances and review of reconciliations on a monthly basis
Other
• Prepare the annual PAYE Supplementary Agreement (PSA) return
• Provide ad hoc support on sundry tax matters (payroll taxes, stamp duties etc) to the business
Person Specification:
• Detailed knowledge of UK corporate tax and ability to apply this to a retail environment
• A working knowledge (initially) of all other UK taxes with a desire to learn and develop more detailed skills in these areas
• To have an awareness of the impact of overseas taxes (detailed foreign tax knowledge is not essential)
• Enthusiastic attitude, willingness to learn and develop new skills
• Excellent communication & interpersonal skills – able to manage a team effectively
• Good attention to detail and calm under pressure
• Proactive and enquiring approach with a “can do” attitude and ability to drive change
