Work as the partner’s number two and ensure your progression
This is a rare opportunity to be a partner’s number two and deal only with senior level work. You will support the partner with his work and deal with complex cases. From day one you will produce and deliver the project work to the clients. The partner has made it clear to me that he wants someone who is open to brainstorming new ideas on how to help the firm’s clients and the strategic direction of the team.
What do your clients look like?
The typical private clients in your portfolio will have a net worth of between £10 and £30 million. They are usually the owners of large OMBs or the CEOs of quoted groups. You will be advising on the personal tax issues revolving around; the extraction of wealth from their businesses, the sale of their businesses, CGT and IHT planning.
Widen your tax experience.
The partner believes that to fully support entrepreneurial clients you need to have an eye on the ‘big picture’. This means that you will be required to consider the business tax implications of your advice. However, the partner does understand that he is bringing you on for your private client expertise not your corporate. With this in mind, he and the wider tax team will be on hand to support you in the development of your corporate tax knowledge. He also made it clear that business tax will never become more than 20% of your work and it will be primarily advisory.
The firm has several partners currently on retirement plans meaning that in the near future it will need several new partners. This is where you come in. As the firm’s preference has always been to home grow its partners, your development will geared towards this. Needless to say this is a role with a high level of visibility. Why is that important? To advance in your career you will need senior staff to respect and like you. It is not possible to advance in any organisation without the buy in of senior staff. A role that involves you working closely with the decision makers will ensure that you are at the head of the queue when the partners consider who they want to promote.
