Appealing variety of work across a broad client base is on offer at this Southampton based accountancy firm. You will look after the tax compliance for your own portfolio of clients, but also get involved in a fair chunk of advisory work. Because the client base is so diverse (anything from start-up companies to listed businesses), the type of services they require tends to be equally extensive. Whilst your remit is the corporate tax, you will still be the main point of contact for any VAT or employment tax services delivered to your clients, acting as the conduit between them and any tax specialist colleagues. The team deal with lots of great quality businesses who are growing and/or have complex tax affairs requiring high quality advice. Many of the Southampton clients don’t have their own in-house tax expertise, so you are more often than not dealing with FDs or the business owners themselves. They are often looking not just for tax technical advice, but also for a broader commercial perspective.

You will be part of a decent sized team with plenty of junior staff to delegate to, which offers the opportunity to develop your leadership skills as well as operational delivery. The firm’s position in the local market is excellent. They have their own bespoke community of local relationships, including lawyers and banks, but they are close enough to London to pick up some of the more heavy duty work. The team is large enough to accommodate a specialism if you have a particular interest, but is also happy for you to be a corporate tax all-rounder.

The Partners are really open on the background of new team members. They will consider people with in-house or accountancy firm (large or small) experience. Perhaps you are relocating to the Southampton area, or live within commuting distance. Either way, hybrid and flexible working is the norm for this team. The Partners are keen to maintain agility in working patterns going forwards, whilst layering on the benefits of seeing each other in person. In short, you are treated as a grown up and trusted to make sensible decisions, both for yourself and your clients. They acknowledge that commuting in the Southampton area in rush hour can be rather odious, so on days that you are going into the office, you can bespoke the way you do that.

This is a firm who devote a lot of time to developing their own people and ensure their well-being. They choose to work smartly, re-pricing when needed and leveraging technology to drive growth, rather than pressuring their staff to increase their chargeable hours. The team are highly collegiate and work together as a cohesive group, sharing workloads and helping each other out when needed. They are also a very sociable bunch. Whilst there are some structured events, there are many more informal ones driven by the team. The team is full of talented people, diverse in terms of level and experience, so you will have lots of peer level support across the grades.

Ideally you will CTA and/or ACA / ACCA qualified and come from a solid UK corporate tax background.
