This presents an opportunity to work in the Global Headquarters of a FTSE 250 plc. DS Smith Plc are a leading provider of corrugated packaging in Europe with a presence in 35 countries, employing around 20,000 people. Our story can be traced back to the box-making businesses started in the 1940s by the Smith brothers in East London. DS Smith originally listed on the London Stock exchange in 1960.

We are currently seeking an Assistant Tax Manager to join the Tax department in London. You will provide support to the Deputy Head of Tax and wider team on a wide range of International projects and global initiatives. The successful candidate, as part of a growing tax team, will experience a wide range of exposure to the Head Office and global functions of a large multinational organisation.
Working closely with the other members of the tax department, you will play an essential role in the implementation of initiatives supporting the Group’s global tax strategy.


Area of Responsibility:

1. Tax structuring - Responsible for project management of small structuring projects. Provides assistance on more complex projects. This will include:

• the preparation of detailed step plans to identify what needs to be done, by when and by whom;
• working with external advisers and internal departments within the UK and overseas to implement all aspects of a project;
• drafting elements of, reviewing and organising the execution of legal documents;
• preparing and overseeing the accounting entries for each project and ensuring the correct statutory accounting disclosures;
• supporting the correct tax treatment and tax return disclosures; and
• identifying solutions to issues that arise during the life of a project

2. Provide support to the Transfer Pricing manager with group documentation, country by country reporting, and other projects.

3. Business support - Provide ad hoc tax advice to other group functions and regional finance teams.

4.Assist with the rationalisation of legal entities that are no longer required.

5. Monitor compliance in the overseas territories and provide support for tax audits arising in those territories.

6. Support the group reporting process during half year and full year.

7. Work to build strong relationships with tax, treasury, finance and operations personnel in key countries responsible for the business operations impacted by projects implemented.

8. Assist with ensuring that the group is compliant with its BEPS requirements.


Professional Qualifications, Skills & Competencies:

• Educated to degree level or equivalent
• Accounting and/or tax qualification
• Post-qualified experience in a tax role, ideally from a leading Practice or multi-national business
• Knowledge of UK direct tax (including CFC, loan relationships, relevant exemptions etc)
• Knowledge of International tax (including application of Double Tax Treaties, foreign tax regimes etc)
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills
• Broad based general accounting knowledge
• Fluent in English, other European language skills would be a benefit
