Our client a national firm of accoiutants is looking for a Head of Tax Technical to support and protect the ability of the firm to win and deliver tax services, and to enhance the reputation of the firm as a leading part of the tax profession.
Key responsibilities:
The role of Head of Tax Technical offers an excellent opportunity for an individual with a deep knowledge of and significant experience in tax to make a significant contribution to the quality and breadth of services provided to clients, the knowledge and expertise of the tax department, and the reputation of the firm in the market.
The firm`s clients consist of private individuals, owner-managed businesses, large corporates, and non-profit organisations. The Head of Tax Technical will be expected to have a broad and deep understanding of the tax issues that will be of relevance to these clients, and to keep abreast of developments in these areas.
The key requirements of the role will entail the instigation, delivery and/or oversight of work in the following areas:
Knowledge Sharing
- The production of a weekly internal tax newsletter
- The regular and ad hoc provision of tax technical training for members of the tax department and other professionally qualified individuals within the firm
- The provision of internal technical guidance, typically on complex and/or evolving areas of tax
- The preparation of external newsletters and articles on technical tax matters
- The delivery of presentations to clients and contacts on tax matters
- The preparation, review and updating of technical tax content in flyers, insights, and other externally focused material
- The management and control of externally provided tax training for those within the firm
- The management of the internal tax knowledge database
- The management of technical tax resources (i.e. the physical and electronic tax library) including oversight of the budget for this
- The provisions of training on Professional Conduct in Relation to Taxation and the prevention of the facilitation of tax evasion
- Oversight of internal tax related training for ACA and CTA trainees
- Management of the firm`s output relating to fiscal events
- Possible involvement in public relations and media work, including identifying opportunities for press comment, preparing and reviewing press releases and quotes, and carrying out discussions and interviews with journalists on tax related issues
Consultancy
- The production and review of tax-related client work, including the provision of technical tax consultancy services to fee earners in the firm
- The provision of consultancy services on the application of Professional Conduct in Relation to Taxation, the General Anti-Abuse Rule, DOTAS and other such regulations and guidance
Risk Management
- Control and development of the Tax Department`s internal quality control and risk management procedures
- The production and maintenance of templates, precedents, checklists and other standard documents for use in client work
- The development and communication of the firm`s policies on tax-related issues
- Involvement in the identification, control and mitigation of tax related risks
- The provision of insight and assistance in the control and development of firm-wide policies and procedures insofar as they have tax-related implications
- The provision of insight and assistance in respect of PI notifications, and complaints, and referrals to the firms risk committee from a tax perspective
Tax Policy
- Engagement in HMRC/HMT consultations on tax matters that are relevant to the firm`s clients and the tax work undertaken by the firm
- Engagement with HMRC and other bodies in respect of tax policy matters as and when the opportunity arises
The Tax Profession
- Constructive engagement with the ICAEW (including in particular the Tax Faculty) and the CIOT, particularly through joining and participating in the work of relevant committees
- The publication of articles in the professional press (e.g. Taxation, Tax Journal, Tax Adviser etc.), and the fulfilment of other external speaking and writing opportunities as and when the opportunity arises
Technology and Systems
- Involvement (along with members of the tax department, the IT department, and others within the firm) in the use and development of systems and software within the firm with a view to increasing efficiency and quality and mitigating risk
- Engagement with the suppliers of IT products that are used in the provision of tax services
- Assistance with the training of users in tax technology packages
Management
- Line management of the Tax Knowledge Manager
Other
- The provision of insight, analysis, and support in respect of the firm`s own tax positionSkills and expertise:
- A Chartered Tax Adviser and ideally a Chartered Accountant with significant tax experience ideally within a professional services firm
- A broad and deep knowledge and understanding of UK tax law and practice
- A good understanding of the UK tax policy process
- A good understanding and working knowledge of tax technology
- A profile within the tax profession, ideally demonstrated through the publication of articles in the professional press and experience in working with professional bodies
- Advanced MS Word and MS PowerPoint skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience of producing tax focused articles, presentations, and marketing materials for a variety of audiences
- Experience of producing bespoke technical tax advice
- A good team player, with an ability to build personal rapport with colleagues
- The ability to take ownership of tasks and drive them to completion
- The ability to prioritise work and to deliver work to an agreed timescale
- A creative, entrepreneurial, and strategic thinker
