About Large Business

Large Business (LB) is responsible for over 2,000 of the largest businesses that pay a significant proportion of the total business taxes and duties that HMRC collects. Each business has a Customer Compliance Manager (CCM) who is responsible for managing the overall relationship with the customer and all aspects of the customer’s tax affairs.

Activity is prioritised by a risk-based approach but also extends to relationship management, working with in-house tax teams as well as the Big 6 Accountancy firms; and requires a deep understanding of the commercial approach LB take.

Job description

We have an exciting opportunity to join LB as a Life Insurance Corporation Tax Specialist (CTTS). This is a customer facing role, working on high-profile risk assessment and compliance work on the UK’s biggest insurers. Our Life Insurance CTTSs also work closely with our policy team contributing to policy design and helping develop new ways of identifying tax risks in advance.

This is a highly specialised role where you will work as a member of one or more teams, dealing with highly complex tax affairs of major UK and International businesses, concentrating mainly on issues with either substantial amounts of tax at risk or requiring a detailed understanding and application of theoretical principles of taxation legislation. You’ll be recognised as a senior leader, with scope to help shape our strategic direction and to help improve the capability of colleagues.

You will also be encouraged to tackle wider portfolio roles, both technical and non-technical, and assist with capturing and sharing knowledge gained from technical reviews and enquiry work to help develop colleagues.

Provide key technical input into the risk identification / working of Large Business customers in the Insurance sector where specific and complex tax legislation applies.

Understand the commercial factors influencing an Insurance company’s tax compliance and build customer focus into projects and compliance checks undertaken.

Respond to customer queries including non-statutory clearance requests, sharing good practice and information as appropriate.

Take the lead in examining Insurance Company returns, accounts, computations and other documents sharing and discussing appraised risk with the customer.

Carry out quality compliance checks, establishing facts, using an investigative approach minimising delays in progressing compliance checks through timely use of information received and the exercise of Formal Powers.

Not only will you provide leadership within the Insurance community, but you will play a key role in providing technical leadership for the regional CT community.

Liaise and co-ordinate with HMRC specialists and other stakeholders where appropriate.

Work closely with Customer Compliance Managers and Tax Professional Managers.

Become a member of or lead ad hoc teams set up for projects across the sector.
