If you’ve proven your tax knowledge and team leadership, this is your chance to step into a substantial Head of Tax job with a business that’s known for helping its clients and people to prosper.

Because of the size and structure of this Top-20 UK firm, you’d have sole responsibility here for managing a single team of tax specialists. It’s a perfectly sized role, with a perfectly sized firm.

You’ve probably heard of UHY Hacker Young already. Since they we formed more than 90 years ago and grown to become one of the UK’s Top-20 groups of Chartered Accountants with 90 partners and 500 professional staff across 19 UK offices. 

In this newly created role, you’d join our East group, which comprises three offices (Letchworth, Cambridge and Huntingdon) and is effectively run as its own small business. You’d be a bona fide head of department, reporting to the group MD and Operations Manager and managing a six-strong tax team, including two Partners.

The group have plans to grow revenue and profitability for both Private Client and Corporate Tax. By taking the weight off the partners who currently run the teams, you’ll be instrumental in making that happen – you can make a noticeable impact here.

It’s a job that offers the best of both worlds, especially if this is a step up from somewhere smaller. You’ll still be focused on local clients. But beyond that, you’ll have room to take on more responsibility and to develop your management skills – all with the backing of an ambitious, growing firm.

What you can add

You’ll have plenty of discretion to do things your way. Strategically, you’ll shape the business plan (working with the Head of Operations) and sharpen our range of products and services. On a day-to-day level, you’ll bring out the best in your team, giving them the support and training they need to hit their targets; that includes hiring new people, as business expands.

Alongside your management responsibilities, you’ll have your own client workload, so you’ll need to be technically proficient in business tax. It’s not essential that you’re an accountant but it’s likely that the person we’re looking for is ACA/CTA qualified (or similar) and has experience providing tax advice to SMEs and owner-managed business.

We’re looking for someone with the ambition and character to really take a tax department forward. You’ll need the confidence and credibility to lead the business planning process and to represent UHY Hacker Young externally.

You’ve already shown you can lead by example and bring out the best in a small team; you’re comfortable setting targets for others and not afraid to hold people to account – even if they’re senior colleagues. Add to that proven communication skills – both on paper and in person – and we’d really like to talk to you.
