This is a maternity cover contract for the UK Tax Manger role within the Partnership Tax Team of a magic circle law firm. The team currently does all the UK tax compliance of its partners, as well as the preparation of UK tax returns for the International Secondment population of those inbound to and outbound from the UK.

Key Responsibilities

Whilst the key focus of this role will be the UK tax compliance for the secondees within the firm, there are other aspects in which you will be involved that will make this an interesting and varied role in the field of tax compliance.

* Manage the UK tax compliance season for UK tax returns prepared in-house; using CCH Personal Tax: software for the preparation of UK tax returns. This will involve, the following: Prepare UK tax returns for firm employees on secondment to and from the UK;
* Collate and analyse all data required for UK tax returns, ahead of UK compliance timelines; this includes liaising with the global HR and payroll teams in the collection and interpretation of compensation data, with support from the Expatriate & Employment Taxes Manager, where assistance is required;
* Review UK tax residence matters and make the appropriate foreign tax credit/double tax treaty exemption claims.
* Liaise directly with secondees to obtain missing information/clarify information submitted, and/or communication of final tax returns and required explanations; this is also likely to involve engaging in discussion about tax treatment of certain items on the tax return with other tax professionals in the team;
* Manage appropriate data systems, to record tax return filing status and reporting;
* Prepare relevant accounting journals to transfer UK tax payments from UK tax fund account, to appropriate business units and manage costs obtaining guidance from accountants within the firm where necessary;
* Monitor UK tax payments and repayments due to the firm and to the secondees. This is to maintain the firm's financial position in relation to the secondees and also to minimise interest payable on overdue tax;
* Assisting with the billing received from external advisers and the internal recharge of costs / refunds;
* Dealing with HMRC enquiries
* Attend the quarterly in-house UK tax technical training, ensuring you are technically up to date, through discussion of key issues with other tax professionals within the team, as well as using the extensive tax library available online (e.g. Simon's, Tax Cases etc); the department also subscribes to Journal and Taxation magazines.
* Short Term Business Visitors (STBV)
Manage the STBV process for the firm to ensure that all statutory reports are produced by the relevant deadlines. This will involve liaising with other teams within the firm, in particular financial controllers, payroll and Global HR.

Skills:

* Strong experience of preparing UK personal tax returns in a professional services environment, with an understanding of UK tax compliance;
* Previous experience of using CCH Personal Tax Software or similar professional tax return software;
* Experience of communicating with HMRC, global teams, engaging with all levels of HR and payroll teams, Finance personnel and external advisers as required.
