VAT Expert - Leading insurance business, Brussels

I am currently supporting a leading multinational insurance business that are looking to make a key hire within their expanding tax group in Brussels. The team has experienced rapid growth as the group expand their European operations and they are now looking for a VAT specialist to join them.

Key Responsibilities:

- Accurate preparation and timely submission of the company's VAT return, including any annual adjustments.
- Ensure the business is compliant with partial exemption method and statutory requirements.
- Review of monthly accounts payable and general ledger transactions
- Monitor and updating, where appropriate, the risk matrix and controls.
- Liaise effectively to maintain a consistent approach to ESL and VAT obligations across the EU.
- Carry out ad-hoc project work across the groups European businesses .
- Keep up-to-date with legislative changes involving tax.
- Provide technical support to finance team and brokers and agents on VAT and premium taxes, and broader corporate tax issues as required
- Management of outsourced service providers in conjunction with the CFO

Required:

- Advanced Excel knowledge and excellent attention to detail
- Strong communication skills and ability to liaise closely with professional advisors and tax authorities
- Ability to work independently with and organise and prioritise own work
- Ability to work as part of a team and liaise with other departments and manage external relationships
- Confidence to challenge information provided and to use initiative especially in dealing with areas of ambiguity

Nice to have:

Existing knowledge or the ability to develop the knowledge of the following:
- insurance and the role of brokers and underwriters
- Corporate taxation
- The legal, regulatory, and accounting environment of the insurance sector
- Premium tax regimes in the EEA
