International Tax Specialist, HMRC, Newcastle

International Tax Specialist
Grade G6
£60,127 to £68,810
Newcastle

Within the fast-paced teams at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), we gather the taxes and duties owed by individuals and organisations across the UK. The money collected in this way then pays for the nation’s public services and benefits – meaning it is absolutely crucial that everyone pays what they owe. We’re committed to ensuring the system is fair and is respected, and as such, we are resolute in our resolve to crack down on those who divert their profits away from the UK and away from the public purse. It is this valuable work that you could play a key part in when you join our new Diverted Profits (DP) team.

The DP team was set up to deal with cross border tax avoidance by multi-national companies with a UK presence, and is responsible for the affairs of some of the world’s largest businesses. We identify those who are diverting their profits away from the UK and work to stop that happening both now and in the future. In this interesting role you will therefore seek to ensure these businesses pay what they owe, including the newly created DP Tax. Investigating transfer pricing risks, you will aim to close the tax gap by settling enquiry cases quickly, particularly as the opportunity will involve undertaking high profile work, attracting a high level of scrutiny from the public and central government bodies. Under this level of scrutiny, you will also promote tax compliance, encouraging businesses to avoid making ‘mistakes’ that have resulted in them not paying the correct amount.

This role requires detailed knowledge of the UK’s transfer pricing rules, and extensive practical experience of applying those rules. It will require significant interaction with internal stakeholders such as HMRC Customer Compliance Managers, and external customers such as group tax managers and their representatives. The successful candidate will need to have experience of dealing with challenging stakeholders, and be able to respond constrictively to challenge from experts in the same field. You will therefore have a relevant qualification such as Membership of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, an accountancy qualification or be a Chartered Tax Advisor, complemented by excellent communication skills. If you have experience of Diverted Profits Tax work in HMRC, practice or in industry, that would be even better but isn’t strictly necessary.

This is a unique opportunity to be involved in interesting projects that ultimately benefit every member of society. If you have the capacity to work collaboratively and flexibly to ensure the best possible outcomes, with the leadership skills to guide and drive these cases, then get in touch today, and investigate the thrilling opportunities that this role will provide.

Closing date: 21 January 2018.
