HM Treasury
Director of Business and International Tax
Salary: £93,000 - £100,000 depending on relevant experience. Usual rules apply for applicants within the Civil Service
Location: Darlington or London
The Treasury is the UK’s economic and finance ministry. It is responsible for formulating and implementing the government’s financial and economic policy. Its aim is to raise the rate of sustainable growth and achieve rising prosperity and a better quality of life with economic and employment opportunities for all.
The Treasury is a department of roughly 2000 civil servants, that has provided advice on economic policy and decisions that affect the public finances throughout the country’s history. The Treasury plays a major convening role across government on a broad range of issues, as a vitally important central department. In all that we do, we work closely with other departments, and the wider public and private sectors including the regulators, to ensure public money is spent well and to drive strong and sustainable economic growth.
We are looking for an exceptional candidate to take on the role of Director of Business and International Tax (BIT). The BIT Group is one of our 14 groups with an aim to provide strategic oversight of business, environmental, transport, property, VAT, excise taxes and customs duties that together raise revenue of over £250 billion a year.
Leading the Group overall, you will advise the Chancellor and other Treasury Ministers, work with No 10 and other departments, including close partnership working with HMRC and build key relationships with tax and customs stakeholders. You will also lead international discussions/negotiations in relevant areas such as customs and indirect tax.
The successful candidate will need to bring experience of working on tax/customs issues in a public policy context; strong strategic vision and an ability to develop and lead a complex portfolio of policy development within a highly political context, and also play a wider corporate leadership role within the department.
Business and International Tax includes staff from diverse professional and personal backgrounds. HMT would welcome candidates that are up for a challenging leadership role within a great Department with a fascinating mix of responsibilities. There is a high degree of autonomous decision making which comes with personal accountability.
Reporting into the Director General - Tax and Welfare, Beth Russell; Treasury is particularly encouraging of flexible working practices and BIT already has many varied working arrangements within the group.
