An assistant manager position has become available in a top firm in the heart of London. You would be working directly with the partner solely on advisory work. Their client base varies greatly in size from sole traders to huge multinational corporations. The work concentrates in the sectors of property and construction work, cross border transactions, business and property sales, negotiation of penalties and appeals to the tribunals along with dispute resolution.

Here, you will never work really hard on something for it to be snatched from your fingertips because it is becomes ‘above your pay grade’. If there is something you find particularly interesting and want to roll with it, you would be able to. The partner would be more than happy to assist you in tackling the larger fish.

You would be working directly with the indirect tax partner who will act as your mentor. The indirect tax partner is known for his technical excellence and is the person that VAT partners in top London firms go to.

The partner is also a proven business developer. He built up his own VAT business from scratch which he then merged into this firm. You can assist in identifying opportunities for additional work, finding potential new clients, attending initial meetings with those clients and beginning to reel in the business alongside the partner. Working so closely with him also means that all the good work you do will be recognised by the person that decides on your promotions. 

Finally, progression. From above, I am sure you have already seen the makings for a speedy succession of promotions – great diversity of work, exposure to complex technical pieces and working closely with the decision maker. However, another thing that will accelerate your progression is that the current partner is planning for his succession. He knows that he will want to retire and he wants to bring on someone with the capability and drive to take over what he’s built throughout the years. He wants that person to be you.
