Indirect Tax Manager, Hertfordshire

Based in Hertfordshire, this hugely successful insurance company have a current need for a Indirect Tax Manager. To ensure compliance by the UK division with its VAT reporting obligations. The role is monitored on a regular basis by the Head of Tax to support development and quality assurance/risk management.

Key duties:

Quarterly VAT reporting by the UK division (including Isle of Man)

* Operating data processes for VAT return
* Preparation and delivery of advice to the business on VAT related topics
* Maintain compliance procedures to ensure VAT is properly dealt with by the business
* Accounting control over VAT input and output accounts
* Acts as a point of contact with HMRC on VAT matters

VAT partial exemption recovery process

* Application and interpretation of VAT rules and PESM to our operations
* Identification of risks and opportunities from application of PESM to the business
* Support the negotiation of any changes in process with HMRC
* Perform annual adjustment calculation, prepare/review Capital Goods Scheme calculations

Submission of miscellaneous tax returns on behalf of the UK division

* Application of overseas premium tax and UK tax deductions at source legislation to our operations to prepare and submit compliant returns on a timely basis
* Acts as a point of contact with HMRC and overseas tax authorities on these returns

Employer tax compliance support to HR and other business functions

* Provision of advice to HR and other departments on tax compliance requirements (including PAYE) in respect of employees
* Preparation of annual PSA return
* Acts as point of contact with HMRC on employer tax matters

Supporting Tax Strategy and SAO compliance by line departments

Supporting regular reviews of tax compliance procedures by the business, including:

* PAYE and related processes by HR and Customer Services
* Staff pension scheme processes by HR/pensions admin
* Chargeable events reporting processes by Customer Services
* Capital Allowances claims, Construction industry and SDRT/SDLT returns by Property Dept

Ad hoc support to Head of Tax, Operational and Employment Taxes Manager and Indirect Tax Manager on various projects and other initiatives

Generic Company Accountabilities (Risk Management & Controls):

* Ensure familiarity with risk management programs, as they impact this position, and follow appropriate risk
* Management procedures to control, monitor and report on business activities
* Ensure compliance with Company policies, regulatory, professional & legal requirements

Key skills:

* Knowledge of VAT legislation as applicable to the financial services industry including partial exemption, cross border and property transactions
* Knowledge of employment tax legislation, including BIKs, PAYE, PSA,
* Some familiarity with chargeable events regime
* Practical experience of using mainframe and pc computer systems
* Communication skills - including ability to explain complex tax technical matters to non-specialists
* Comfortable dealing with individuals at all levels within an organisation
* Good report-writing and excel skills
* Experience of dealing with HMRC
* Experience of working in the life assurance industry desirable

Qualifications:

* Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or equivalent) or tax qualified (ATT/CIOT)
