Vice President in Product Tax with a leading Investment Management firm

My client who is one of the world`s preeminent asset management firms is seeking a Vice President in Product Tax within their Hong Kong office.

Role Aim/Purpose:

Due to the broadening of the existing product suite in the APAC region, a new role is being created for a permanent hire to join the APAC Product Tax group in Hong Kong as a product tax specialist, with a primary focus on mainstream products and exchange traded funds, as well as alternative products. Reporting to the senior Asia Pacific product tax lead, this role is an in-house tax advisory role, with a strong technical and business exposure to product tax matters across the region.

Major Responsibilities:

- Identify and advise on tax issues/changes impacting on the firm`s Asia Pacific`s products and deliver commercially relevant advice pertaining to those subjects
- Assist with new product development/structured transactions by being a trusted advisor to the business;
- Assist with broader asset management tax issues specific to the firm`s Asia Pacific`s mainstream businesses and markets, including Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and India.
- Ongoing tax oversight for the fund ranges and vehicles associated with the Retail, Institutional and iShares businesses, including review of offer documents, investment management agreements and tax related product policies
- Roll-out of training and provide education on tax matters to the Retail, Institutional and iShares businesses
- Assistance in the process of tax due diligence on instruments and investments to be held by the funds
- Liaise closely with the EMEA and US Product Tax and Alternatives Tax teams on products that may be global in reach, both mainstream and alternatives
- Support the senior Asia Pacific Product Tax lead to deliver to the Alternative client and marketing teams appropriate client communications on Alternatives tax issues and research tax implications of new Alternative product proposals
- Establish processes to control compliance for new products and new markets
- Responsibility of the withholding tax reclaim and documentation processes in Asia Pacific
- Assist with managing relationships with external tax partners and stakeholders, including advisors and tax authorities
- Participation in APAC industry forums to influence product tax policy where applicable to the firm
- Ensure relevant finance, product development and fund accounting staff are kept up to date with actual and proposed changes and tax technical developments that impact the APAC mainstream and Alternatives business from a tax perspective.

Experience, Skills & Knowledge Required:
- Degree in Finance/Accounting or Law
- Post-graduate qualifications in law/CA/CPA license or equivalent
- 7 years tax experience, preferably within the fund management industry
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of product taxation and cross border tax issues
- Demonstrated high level of commerciality
- Able to communicate complex tax issues clearly and concisely, in a manner targeted at a wide range of different audiences
- Proven ability to connect the dots across operating functions
- Strong stakeholder management skills
- Ability to operate within a global matrix structure to effectively influence key stakeholders
