Interim tax jobs shown on this page of etaxjobs do not tend to be advertised for very long. The majority listed will be in London but since the pandemic most will also be offered on a remote basis, perhaps with occasional office meetings.
In terms of how we define an interim tax job (or temporary tax job or tax contract), this is a role that is not permanent. It may be offered on a fixed term basis eg 12 months with a specific salary, but if it has arisen because of maternity cover or to provide assistance whilst a permanent hire is made, then the employer may not fix the term and instead offer a daily rate.

We would also suggest maintaining a good relationship with tax recruiters who operate in this market. Most employers outsource the hiring of temporary tax roles to agencies.

Interim tax jobs tend to arise because the tax recruitment market on the permanent side is very candidate-driven. This means that when someone resigns from their job it is common that their 1 month or 3 month notice period is not sufficient for the employer to find a replacement and ensure a smooth transition. If the work is urgent then a 'contractor' is sought to fill the gap (generally a few months).
The other instances that trigger interim tax jobs are 1) maternity leave and 2) specific project work (typically in large global corporates) or 3) where there is a (global) moratorium on increasing permanent headcount and only contractors can be hired (because they are not deemed to be employees).
Interim tax jobs used to be a route back into a permanent job, but because they can be very lucrative, many tax professionals choose this as their preferred career option. In addition to attractive remuneration it can offer the flexibility to take time off to travel whilst also providing exposure to a wide range of industries.
