The Team

The team works with businesses whose operations include some aspects of research and development (R&D) and helps them to benefit from the generous tax relief available under UK tax legislation. The companies include specialist companies such as IT, engineering, technological and pharmaceutical companies as well as other institutions, such as financial companies, which incur some R&D expenditure in activities peripheral to their main business.

The Role

You will work with the client technical staff through on-site interviews and workshops, to identify which of their activities qualify as R&D under UK tax legislation. These assessments are sometimes expanded to include international sites and legislation, in co-operation with the firms global network.

The next step is to prepare a report on the client's activities, in terms sufficiently clear to be understood by persons of a non-scientific/engineering background. The team must then satisfy any enquiry by the Inland Revenue to ensure a successful claim.

The technical specialist will focus, in particular, on the technical aspects of the client's R&D in order to provide an argued justification for including the activities within the claim. However, the technical specialist will have an important role to play in the initial selling of the project by demonstrating the credibility of the team in that particular specialist area.

The Individual

Broad knowledge of software / IT development, ideally in an architect or system design role.

* good knowledge and understanding of commercial IT development and business issues
* ability to talk knowledgeably with researchers and translate what they are doing into plain language
