The Tax Department in this Global Financial Services Group is responsible for monitoring the Firm's tax risk, dealing with internal tax planning, all direct & indirect tax compliance and Business Unit support. The Europe Tax department is broadly divided into four groups: Firm Compliance & Planning (direct tax), Investment Tax Products, Indirect Tax and Business Unit Tax Coverage groups.
The role involves providing support within the Firm Compliance & Planning group. The group is headed by an Executive Director and comprises a team of fourteen. The group is responsible for all direct tax returns and audits in Europe together with involvement in internal restructures, Firm acquisitions and Business Unit structures that are on the Firm's Balance Sheet.
The candidate will be report to the Vice Presidents in the group. They will have responsibility for a portfolio of companies and transactions, both in the UK and across the European, Middle East and Africa Region (EMEA). They will also have reporting and development responsibilities for more junior staff.
The role will include:
· Management responsibilities for a significant number of UK and EMEA companies:
§ Preparation and review of UK corporation tax returns
§ review and submission of corporate income tax returns and review of tax payment calculations
§ managing tax audits, with controller and advisor liaison in the UK and overseas
§ identifying tax risk and involvement in executing solutions in respect of new or changing business activities
§ involvement in acquisitions, mergers, planning and financing structures
§ US Federal Annual Tax reporting exercise (5471)
· Tax technical:
§ Identifying and researching UK and EMEA tax technical matters affecting allocated companies
§ Understanding transactions and other business issues and applying this knowledge to complete transaction overviews
§ Acting as a key liaison with our Business Unit Tax Coverage team and running regular update meetings
· Financial reporting and accounting:
§ Completion of manager role for the quarterly effective tax rate process for Europe, as well as the year end tax provision process both for US GAAP group reporting and for UK GAAP/ European GAAP individual company reporting. Some of this will be preparation and some solely a review function.
§ Reviewing the tax disclosures in UK financial statements for coverage companies and review of certain overseas entities tax disclosures for financial statements.
· Tax risk and administration management:
§ Completion and review of internal monitoring systems including:
· Tax payment systems
· Tax risk monitoring
· Tax Audit status
This role is ideal for somebody expecting to develop their career in financial services tax and should be a minimum of full ACA or ATII (or other similar qualification), with experience within a reputable accounting firm or within industry.
A good knowledge of general UK corporation tax issues and practical corporation tax compliance experience is required. Experience of other tax jurisdictions would be an advantage, but otherwise a willingness to develop an understanding of tax jurisdictions within EMEA which may be new to the candidate. Experience of US GAAP, the US tax system and issues is advantageous but not essential.
It is imperative that the candidate has good accounting skills and has practical experience of dealing with tax accounting under UK GAAP. Experience of IFRS is advantageous but not essential.
